What is FSC® and what is the importance of FSC® certification?

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international non-profit organisation that helps to ensure responsible forest management and stewardship. FSC® standards are designed to use the world's forest resources in an environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically viable manner.

Forests – the home of wildlife and the people who live in them – must be conserved, cared for and their resources managed in a way that future generations can enjoy. The stringent, clearly defined standards and the principles that guide their application have made FSC® certification the world's most recognised, trusted and respected system.

This is why the possession of an FSC&reg certificate is becoming a significant added value for businesses operating in the FSC&reg chain of custody.

FSC® production chain

The FSC&C Chain of Custody (CoC) – is the path a product takes from the point of forestry or processing to the point where it is sold with the FSC&C label or finished and sold with the FSC&C label. The CoC covers all the steps of sourcing, processing, marketing and distribution, where the ownership of the product changes as it moves to the next stage of the supply chain.

10 FSC® principles

The principles are designed to suit different types of forest ecosystems and require that any certified forest manager in different cultural, political and legal contexts:

• comply with all applicable laws;
• maintain or improve the social and economic well-being of workers;
• protect the rights of indigenous peoples;
• maintain or improve the social and economic well-being of local communities;
• manage their products and services so as to maintain or improve their long-term economic viability, social and environmental benefits;
• maintain, conserve and/or restore the ecosystem services and environmental values of managed forests, and avoid, correct or reduce negative environmental impacts;
• prepare a management plan setting out economic, environmental and social policies and objectives;
• demonstrate progress towards achieving these objectives;
• maintain or enhance key environmental values;
• ensure that all management activities comply with the principles and criteria of FSC®.
